Kalymnos's Smart City Platform

The project relates to the supply and installation of an integrated solution for the management of the waste collection operation. The aim is to convert simple bins (new or old, above or below ground, metal or plastic) into smart bins using capacity sensor technology.
Vehicle Fleet Management Subsystem
The subsystem includes the vehicle fleet management software. The application is an integrated vehicle fleet organisation and management system. It uses the proven and reliable GPS (Global Positioning Satellite System) and GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) technologies to provide users with the necessary means to manage the vehicle fleet more efficiently, with a focus on reducing its operating costs and achieving the best possible result, ensuring the long-term profitability of this investment.
Subsystem Management of bin capacity and weighing data
The subsystem of weighing and identification of bins uses modern technologies for the identification of the electronic identity of each bin on the one hand, and for the automated recording of the weight during their collection by the garbage truck on the other hand. Electronic identification is carried out by means of radio frequencies (RFID technology) using special equipment that is compatible with modern and internationally recognised standards. Seven (7) vehicles are equipped with an RFID tag reader, weighing sensors with a pressure sensor mounted on the arm of each vehicle, a data control unit, which is directly connected to the vehicle’s telematics device (GPS/GPRS) to send the recorded data to the central management application and an ON/OFF switch. The bins are fitted with an RFID smart tag, which carries a unique identification code and is specially designed to operate in outdoor environmental conditions. During waste collection, the bin is automatically weighed and at the same time its electronic identity is read by the RFID reader. The position, weight and identity data (for the specific time of recording) are then sent to the control centre, where they are stored in a database for further processing and display on a digital map.
